Pfizer to lose Viagra patent in 2012

Postby admin on Tue Apr 12, 2011 11:16 am

Pfizer is gearing up to lose its patent on the famous blue pill, Viagra, in 2012. The development of Viagra Jet will not extend the drug’s patent life beyond its 2012 expiration, Pfizer said.

A number of the company’s patents are due to expire over the next few years, and it has said that it would drastically reduce its research budget to shrink operations. Among the plants due to close is a factory in Sandwich, England, where Viagra was developed.

No plans have been announced yet as to what will happen when they lose the patent, and Pfizer seem to be keeping very quiet. It is quite possible that Pfizer will do a deal with a generic company like Teva or similar, although there may be a ‘free for all’ within the generics companies, but no one knows yet.

Cialis often known as the ‘weekend drug’ made by Lilly, has been gaining ground on Viagra sales recently, but their patent only has another few years left before it runs out. Levitra by Bayer is also in a similar boat to Lilly, although they have recently brought out a new oral dissolvable tablet called Levitra 10mg ODT which is hoped will boost their flagging sales.

Over the past years, sales of erectile dysfunction medication have been hindered by illegal copies and online sales by non-pharmacy websites. Pfizer along with Google, have been trying to close these websites down, and cut down on all the illegal spam that we all seem to get and hate.

What does the future hold for erectile dysfunction therapy? Well, Pfizer have already brought out a chewable version, Bayer have brought out a dissolve on the tongue version, but what about nasal sprays, patches or even gels?
