David Cameron blasted over closure of Pfizer Viagra site

Postby admin on Thu Feb 03, 2011 9:46 am

Labour have accused David Cameron of having “no strategy for growth”, following this week’s surprise decision by US group Pfizer to close a major research and development base at Sandwich in Kent.Labour has reportedly accused Mr Cameron of being “snubbed” by the US group, saying he should “get a grip” on the economy. The Prime Minister has called the closure “depressing”. The UK has already lost thousands of highly skilled science jobs following redundancies at AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline.
Earlier this week, the pharmaceutical giant said that it would withdraw from its state-of-the-art UK site within the next two years, as it refocused its research and development worldwide. Sandwich is Pfizer’s largest research site in Europe and it is where blockbuster drug Viagra was developed.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Cameron said he had talked to Pfizer and been reassured that the closure was not a reflection of skills in the UK or the UK business environment.
“There is no doubt that the decision is being taken not because of some UK-based issue, but because the company has decided to exit some whole areas of endeavour, like allergies and respiratory diseases,” Mr Cameron said.
The majority of staff at the Sandwich site will be made redundant, but “several hundred” may be redeployed in other Pfizer operations.
