Denise Welch: Viagra keeps our marriage solid

ELLY stars Denise Welch and Tim Healy are saving their marriage with the help of Viagra.

Loose Women host Denise, 51, revealed the sex pills have helped her and Tim, 59, rediscover the love that first drew them together.

The ex-Corrie actress and former Auf Wiedersehen Pet actor Tim have just returned from a make-or-break holiday in Portugal and Spain.

Denise who has admitted cheating in the past told The People in a frank interview: Things are much better since Tim has been taking Viagra. Its really helped both of us.

Since Tim starting taking it, our relationship has changed for the better and we are much happier.

Ten years ago we used to do things like go away to Amsterdam for dirty weekends. Things are a bit more like that again, which is great for both of us. Its not all just down to the Viagra of course. But its certainly been a factor. All I worry about is that Tim doesn't mix up the Viagra with his sleeping pills. Wed have a few problems again then!

Their 22-year marriage hit rock bottom earlier this year following Denise's admission she had problems with cocaine and booze.

The People also revealed she met up again with Steve Murray the former BBC carpenter with whom she once had a five-month affair in Thailand in February.

But Denise, who claimed Steve was only helping with her autobiography, said the romantic holiday with Tim convinced them both that their marriage could be saved.

They decided to go after she quit the BBC series Waterloo Road this year.

She said: Its the first time Ive had a summer off in years. We had a great time.

I didn't have to film Waterloo Road, which made it easy for us to go off together.

We spent a week in Portugal and then had a few days in Spain. It felt great to be together. It made me realise family time means an awful lot to me and spending more time with Tim was lovely.

Denise spoke to The People on Thursday night in Gateshead, where she attended a black-tie charity ball with her dad Vin. Tim was in Spain filming the ITV drama Benidorm. She was in no mood to hide the mistakes she has made in the past.

But she insisted she has never neglected her duties as a mum to sons Matthew, 22, and Louis, nine.

She said: Ive cut down my work schedule a lot to spend more time with my family. Ive always been a good mum.

The most important thing is my son Louis. We nearly lost him when he was born. He had a rare bowel disorder called Hirschsprungs disease but hes fine now. As long as hes sorted, were OK.

Denise went on: Tim has to go away for 17 weeks to film Benidorm. That's when Ill go back to life as a single mum again.

But this time I think Ill cope better than I have in the past.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Time apart is how we keep our marriage alive. I went to watch Tim rehearse for Benidorm. When I left he was dressed as a drag queen, roller-skating with Su Pollard.

She has suffered years of crippling depression, which began after her musician son Matthew was born, and had a devastating nervous breakdown in 2004.

It left her shaking in terror and vomiting behind the scenes of a panto she was starring in. Eventually she walked out.

She survived due to Tim's patience and support but then she repaid him by embarking on the torrid affair with Steve, 41.

Tim discovered the fling when Denise accidently texted him instead of Steve.

But despite all their ups and downs, the couple still share a country mansion in Wilmslow, Cheshire, with their two sons.

Denise found fame as Coronation Street barmaid Natalie Barnes and has admitted she took drugs between takes on the soaps set.

Unsurprisingly, Corrie bosses have ruled out a return for her character. The actress has also confessed to binge drinking and vowed to reduce her alcohol intake because it can set off her depression.

But she downed glass after glass of champagne and white wine throughout the evening in Gateshead.

Luckily her pensioner father Vin was by her side, attempting to keep her on the straight and narrow. I'm taking her back to my house, he explained, I need to make sure she gets home safely because shes got to get to a meeting by 10am tomorrow.

Denise added: I know a lot of people consider some of the things Ive done are wrong. But no one really knows what goes on between Tim and me. We've been together a long time and are very happy at the moment.

Maybe it hasn't always been this way. But I'm just thankful that I have got some fabulous people around me who are helping me straighten my life out. My father has played a massive role. He is really looking after me and I'm in a far better place.
