seized 80,000 illegally imported Sildenafil tablets.

UK Border Agency Officers at Newcastle Airport have seized 80,000 illegally imported Sildenafil tablets, which is the main active ingredient in Viagra – widely the most popular erectile dysfunction medication. The estimated value of the haul is pitched at around £300,000 - £500,000. The tablets had entered the country via a flight from Mumbai, India to Heathrow and were discovered after checks had been carried out on secure road freight to Newcastle. The tablets were disguised as “food additives”, but further checks proved otherwise.
At present it is unknown if the tablets are genuine or counterfeit. However, medicines smuggled into the country and nearly always found to be counterfeit and thus pose a massive risk to whoever takes them, with the source and ingredients in the tablet being completely unclear.
Fred Simmons, assistant director of the UK Border Agency, is pleased with the seizure and has said: “Medicines smuggled into the country illegally are often found to be counterfeit and as such pose a huge health risk to the end user."
“Anyone tempted to buy these illegitimate products, whether over the Internet or otherwise, should also remember that the gangs smuggling these goods often have links to serious organised crime."
Counterfeit Viagra tablets may be sold at cheap prices but is it really worth the massive risk these fake pills pose? The end user often has no idea where they have originated from and are putting their health at a huge risk. Health aside, it is also highly unlikely the fake tablets will even work for the purpose they were originally bought!
