Treatment options for ED

Postby doc on Tue Feb 26, 2008 3:35 pm

Prescription medications like Viagra (sildenafil), Levitra (vardenafil), and Cialis (tadalafil) are frequently prescribed for ED treatment, but vacuum devices, penile implants, and vascular surgery are also options. It may also be helpful for some patients to receive some form of psychotherapy as well.

Vacuum devices are non-drug options for treating erectile dysfunction. The device creates a vacuum around the penis, which draws blood into the penis and allows it to engorge, hence causing an erection.

Vascular Surgery is another non-drug option for this disorder. Surgery can be performed to restore blood flow to the penile area if the vasculature (blood vessels) to the area is compromised. Penile implants can be surgically embedded into the scrotum as an alternative to drug therapy or vacuum devices. These types of surgeries have fallen out of favor in recent years due to the possible risk of infection associated with such invasive procedures. As a result, prescription medications have become the treatment of choice for erectile dysfunction.

Psychological therapy and behavior modifications are other options to treat erectile dysfunction. This method targets any anxiety that may be associated with sexual intercourse. If your doctor feels this is an issue for you, a visit to a psychologist or psychiatrist may be warranted.

Along with Viagra, two other drugs are also available for treating ED. Levitra (vardenafil) was approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in August 2003 and Cialis (tadalafil) was approved in November 2003. Each of the three drugs is effective for ED. One advantage Cialis offers though is a longer duration of action. Cialis has been shown to improve erectile function for up to 36 hours following dosing. This allows for more flexibility in planning sexual intercourse.

Treatments for ED

Postby jimmy03 on Mon Nov 10, 2008 7:13 am

Erectile dysfunction is the condition in which the men are unable to get the erection or to hold the erection for the sufficient time during the sexual intercourse. According to the latest survey, 70% of the men in the world suffer from the erectile dysfunction. All the men like to perform well in the bed, but if they fail to do it, they feel ashamed of themselves. As a result of erectile dysfunction, men tend to lose their self-esteem and confidence in social life. Because of erectile dysfunction men start feeling that they are unable to satisfy their partner’s sexual demands, and certainly start losing interest in life.

Men don’t get unsatisfied, the good news is here, “Erectile Dysfunction is 100% curable.” Yes, it is true that with the help of proper treatment under the doctor’s guidance erectile dysfunction can be treated and you can get back your harder and long-lasting erection. Treatments through which erectile dysfunction can be treated are categorized into two types i.e. Surgical treatment and nonsurgical treatment.

Surgical treatments

Surgical treatment is done by reconstructing the arteries in the penis to increase the blood flow, which results in the long-lasting erections. Suppose if the person is failing to get the erection then surgery is done by implanting the prosthetic device in the penis. As result you start getting the erection. Sometimes even the veins in the penis which allows the blood to flow out the penis are blocked with the help of surgery and thus, you are able to hold the erection for the longer time.

Different types of surgical treatments are as follows:

1. Penile implants

A device in inserted in the penis which helps to get the erection. All the men using this surgery had expressed their satisfaction.

2. Semirigid or Malleable Rod Implants

In this surgery, two semirigid or malleable rods are inserted in the penis with the help of surgery and this provides the proper hard erection. Success rate is 70% to 80%.

3. Inflatable Implants

The most expensive treatment with the lots of risk involved. This treatment is not advisable. In this treatment, a pump in placed in scrotum, two cylinders are placed in penis, and a reservoir is placed in the cylinders or separately below the tissues of the lower abdomen. This all parts function together and give you the erection. But, rate of failure is quite high in this treatment.

4. Vascular Reconstructive Surgery

Surgery is done to either reconstruct the arteries in the penis or to block the veins which supply blood out of the penis. This surgery is found to be effective in 90% of the cases.

Nonsurgical Treatments

Nonsurgical treatments are found to be more effective and risk free as compared to the surgical. Doctors always prefer nonsurgical treatment over the surgical treatments.

Nonsurgical treatments are very cheaper when compared with the surgical treatments. Nonurgical treatments also follow the same method for treatment of the erectile dysfunction i.e. to increase the blood flow to the penis and stop the blood flow out of the penis.

Different types of nonsurgical treatments are as follows:

1. Vacuum Devices

Treatment through vacuum devices consists of a cylinder that is place over the penis, which pumps out the air out of the penis and allows the more amount of blood to flow into the penis. The treatment is very cheap and effective. Side-effects are pain, numbness, and pulling of scrotal tissue into the cylinder.

2. Drugs

Oral drugs are found to be best medication on the erectile dysfunction. Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are found to be the doctor’s and customer’s choice all over the world. These are found to be most effective against the erectile dysfunction. Side-effects of these drugs are headache, temporary changes in the vision, and nasal congestion. Heart attacks were also found in 1% of the users.

3. Penile Injection Therapy

This therapy includes the injecting the drugs in liquid form directly into the penis. TriMix, Alprostadil, papaverine are the most common drugs injected in the penis to treat erectile dysfunction. Success rate observed is 90%.

4. Hormonal Therapy
I
Lower concentration of the testosterone is found in majority of men suffering from the erectile dysfunction. But erectile dysfunction can not be treated by increasing the level of testosterone. So, levels of testosterone are increased in combination with some other treatment of erectile dysfunction to show the good results.

5. Intraurethral Pellet Therapy

In Intraurethral pellet therapy the drug, Alprostadil, is formulated into a small suppository and this suppository is inserted into the urethra, the canal through which urine and semen are excreted. The drug starts its effect and treats erectile dysfunction. Side-effects of this therapy are pain in the area where pellet is distributed and sometimes bleeding is also observed.

Hence, we can conclude that nonsurgical treatment is much more effective than the surgical treatment in the treatment of the erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction is the malfunctioning of the penis caused by the inadequate amount of blood supply to the penis during the sexual activity. Erectile dysfunction is considered to be caused by the psychological and physiological reasons. Hence, due to the less amount of blood supply men fail to get the erection and hold the erection for long time during the sexual activity. The erectile dysfunction occurs when men are suffering with some diseases or abnormal conditions. Thus, we can say that erectile dysfunction makes us aware that something is abnormal in our body. In simple words we can say that “erectile dysfunction is an indication of health problems.”
Erectile dysfunction also gives us the clue regarding the stamina of the person and is said that it informs us about the asthma that you are going to face in the future. Erectile dysfunction gives an idea that men may suffer with the atherosclerosis. The lack of blood supply to the penis is caused also due to the deposition of the plaque in the arteries. Thus the deposition of the plaque in the arteries gives us the hint that you are also suffering with atherosclerosis. Erectile dysfunction is also found to the alarming condition for the Peyronies disease. So, from this article it is clear that erectile dysfunction is an indication of various health problems. If you suffer from any of the above mentioned diseases then there are high chances that you may suffer from erectile dysfunction also.

First of all please consult your doctor and find out that which type of erectile dysfunction you are suffering from. Is it psychological or physical? After that think about the erectile dysfunction treatment..

Hi,

I am currently working on a brand new television series for Channel 4 called ‘The Food Hospital’ (working title). The idea of the programme is to explore the possible health benefits of everyday foods in targeting a wide range of medical conditions and symptoms. I am hoping this will be of interest, as Erectile Dysfunction is something we are hoping to look at.

There’s plenty of evidence to say that our health and our diet are closely linked and current scientific research shows that certain foods can be used to treat some illnesses and / or their symptoms.

Patients attending ‘The Food Hospital’ will be advised by our team of medical professionals, including a GP, a specialist medical Consultant and a leading Dietitian. Using evidence-based, cutting-edge scientific research, the team will prescribe specific diets for the treatment of the patients’ conditions or symptoms. The team will welcome patients with serious illnesses and everyday ailments alike. The treatment that the Food Hospital will offer is intended to be followed in conjunction with the patient’s existing medical regime, and the Food Hospital medical team will endeavour to work collaboratively with the patient’s current medical advisors.

We are currently looking to speak to people who might be interested in knowing more about ‘The Food Hospital’. This could be people who are living with a condition which affects their life, or people who have recently started to experience symptoms they wish to address.

I would love the opportunity to discuss our project with you and your members in more detail.

With many thanks,
Edd Buckley
'The Food Hospital' - Researcher
